State Trading Organisation (STO), on Wednesday, stated that they are currently conducting an internal investigation into the illegal import of unnecessary pharmaceuticals.
STO's Chairman Hamid Nasheed Mohamed and Managing Director Husen Amru Mohamed Rashad were summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on State Owned Enterprises (SOE). At the meeting, Amru declared that the matter was being taken seriously.
According to Amru, STO’s accounting system does not hold any records of the medications. He added that he is unaware of any other similar issues that may have occurred.
STO imports the majority of pharmaceuticals used in Maldives and operates numerous pharmacies across the nation. The Managing Director asserted that most of their pharmacies were running on losses and they were finding ways to cut costs for the outlets.
He answered all the questions posed by the SOE committee members over the course of two hours.
