Due to the spiraling parking situation in the streets of Male' and Hulhumale', Police have decided to reimpose parking stickers and fines alongside recommencing towing of unlawfully parked vehicles starting Thursday.
Maldives Police Services has decided to resume issuance of parking tickets and towing of unlawfully parked vehicles in a bid to control the escalated parking situation in the streets of the Male’ province.
A statement released by the police yesterday stated that vehicles are parked in manners that impede ease of travel for pedestrians, vehicles and notably, emergency vehicles and buses through the streets of Male' region.
The authorities have notified drivers to refrain from parking outside the allocated parking zones in Male, Hulhumale Phase 1 and Phase 2. Warning that action will be taken against drivers who fail to comply with this notice under the Land Transport Act and Vehicle Parking Regulations, the authorities presented a window until Thursday for the implementation of this policy.
As stipulated in Article 7 (c) of the Land Transport Act, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and any institutions conferred by this Ministry reserves the rights to fine drivers who park land vehicles in violation of the regulation alongside removing points from the driver’s license.
Additionally, the police maintains the power to remove and tow all vehicles in the area excluding specific vehicles of the owner.
Furthermore, Article 14 (b) in this Act mandates imposing a fine of MVR 750 over drivers who parking their vehicles unlawfully omitting situations where parking stickers are issued.
The police stated that five areas are inspected with primary priority for the implementation of this policy which includes the green zone, streets frequented by public transport, intersections of roads alongside areas neighboring schools. Furthermore, action will be taken against parked vehicles that impede people frequenting in and out of office headquarters, hospital buildings, areas allocated for people with disabilities, mosques, general households and garages.
The present administration had determined to cease imposing parking stickers until parking buildings and allocated parking spaces are established. However, the parking situation in the City of Male’ had spiraled with this decision. While Boduthakurufaanu Magu does not permit any vehicle parking, vehicles are seen parked on both sides of the road, impeding ease of travel through the road for drivers and pedestrians alike.
