Prosecutor General's Office on Wednesday levied charges against six individuals at W Construction, over the death of a young girl who was struck by a falling cement bag from a construction site in December 2018.
The people indicted in the incident are W Construction's Managing Director Moosa Hassan, Senior Site Supervisor Adam Shafeeq, and four Indian nationals.
According to the PG Office, the cement bag fell due to the loosening of the winch line while the bag was being hoisted to the ninth floor of Nalahiya construction site, where the tragic incident occurred.
Moosa Hassan and Adam Shafeeq are charged with negligent homicide, over failing to take the necessary steps in hoisting cement bags with a lifting sling. The charge carries a minimum sentence of one year, seven months and six days in jail as per the Penal Code.
One of the Indian nationals, who operated the winch, is charged with reckless homicide. The PG Office stated that he had deliberately operated the winch despite not being tasked to do so. The charge carries a six-year prison sentence.
The others are charged with being an accomplice to reckless homicide, which carries a sentence of three years, two months and 12 days.
The victim, Rawshan Jian, was the elder of two daughters born to a family of Bangladeshi doctors working in Maldives. She was struck by the cement bag on December 16, 2018, and succumbed to her injuries the day after while in intensive care.
