Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, revealed that another individual tested positive for measles following the announcement of the outbreak on January 11.

As per the agency, the eighth case was diagnosed on Tuesday during daily screenings conducted to identify measles cases.

Authorities are in the midst of carrying out a three-month vaccination campaign, specifically targeting unvaccinated individuals and those who did not receive the second dose of the vaccine, especially those below the age of 25.

As of Tuesday, the Ministry of Health administered the measles vaccine to 4,025 individuals. The government has secured a donation of 30,000 measles vaccine doses from India which was received on January 23. The administration is seeking to acquire total 200,000 doses.

Measures implemented against the outbreak also include awareness programmes catering to expatriates residing in the country.

The measles outbreak was announced two years after World Health Organization (WHO) declared Maldives as one of the first measles-free countries in the South Asia region in 2017.
