IGMH spends nearly MVR one billion on outsourced departments

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has spent nearly MVR 1 billion for its outsourced departments.

According to IGMH responding to the right-to-information (RTI) application submitted by Mihaaru News, the hospital's National Cardiac Center and National Urorenal and Fertility Centers are outsourced to Indian hospitals.

India's Meditrina Hospital was contracted to manage IGMH's National Cardiac Center on November 15, 2015 for a 10-year period.

Under the agreement made between the hospitals, Meditrina was contracted to provide clinical services, management and provide training experiences for local doctors.

IGMH further said that the agreement with Meditrina allowed it to facilitate previously unavailable services in the Maldives.

The hospital added it was currently working to introduce new services in collaboration with Meditrina.

IGMH has spent USD 28.7 million (MVR 442 million) to Meditrina since the date of the agreement until July 2023. During the same period, IGMH also paid MVR 355,647 in salaries for Meditrina's doctors stationed in the cardiac center.

IGMH contracted NU Hospital to manage the hospital's Urorenal and Fertility Center for a period of 15 years. The agreement was signed on May 2, 2016.

Similar to the agreement with Meditrina, NU Hospital was contracted to provide clinical services, management and provide training experiences for local doctors.

Additionally, NU Hospital contracted NU Hospital to manage the hospital's Urorenal and Fertility Center for a period of 15 years. The agreement was signed on May 2, 2016.

IGMH has spent USD 33.7 million (MVR 521 million) to NU Hospital since the of the agreement until July 2023, with an additional MVR 3.8 million spent on the hospital's doctors during the period.

The Maldives government has paid a total of MVR 963,997,830 to the Indian hospitals to manage the departments, while the total, inclusive of salaries, reached MVR 968 million.

IGMH said that it was collaborating with foreign hospitals to facilitate tertiary medical services, provide specialist care, and acquire their professional instructions.

The hospital said it sought help of foreign medical institutions until local doctors received adequate training.
