Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has decided to include the fee of waste collection into the electricity bill of households in the Greater Malé Area, starting from April.

According to a statement released by the Ministry on Thursday, they have decided to include the waste management fee in the electricity bill starting from April, as the Waste Management Act allows for the fee to be included in utility bills.

The ministry noted that the inclusion of the waste management fee in the electricity bill will not impact the waste collection fee, and households will not be required to re-register under the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) for waste collection.

However, disposal of large bulky items will not be covered under this, they said.

The statement said that this change was implemented to address the problem of unpaid waste management fees in the Malé area. According to the Ministry, out of the 53,000 households that require waste collection, only around 20,000 households pay their monthly fees regularly.

This has led to WAMCO facing insufficient funds for their operations, including the purchase and repair of their equipment.
