Prosecutors have charged main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson Ali Waheed with terrorism reportedly over the violence that erupted during the May Day protest last year.
Sources say the case has been forwarded to the Criminal Court late last month.
Waheed fled to Britain last year in fear of prosecution and has since been granted political asylum.
He is reportedly facing similar charges as religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla of inciting violence during the protest.
Imran was found guilty of terrorism over a speech he gave at the May Day rally and sentenced to 12 years in prison in February.
Imran was accused of inciting violence with the prosecution arguing that he must bear responsibility for the violent clashes.
Ali Waheed joins the ranks of high-profile politicians and state officials jailed since March last year, which now include a former president, two former defence ministers, a ruling party MP, an opposition party leader, an opposition aligned lawmaker, a former vice president, a senior military officer, a former chief prosecutor, and a magistrate.
