Maldives Democratic Party’s (MDP) National Council decided on Thursday night to file a request with their parliamentary group to initiate a formal public inquiry into the allegations made by the opposition against former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
President Solih finished his term in office last Friday.
In the resolution adopted at the national congress meeting in Alifu Alifu atoll Ukulhas, they decided a request for an inquiry will be submitted to the parliament regarding the comments made by the opposition, the party currently in office.
These include allegations made claiming there are thousands of Indian soldiers stationed in Maldives and that they were planning to take away the country’s independence and sovereignty, in addition to allegations stating the former administration had sold off parts of the country’s territorial waters. They had also claimed President Solih’s administration was involved in corruption as well.
The resolution also included forming a five-member committee to lead the work needed to be done by the party regarding the upcoming parliamentary election, as well as a committee to hold the government accountable.
The resolution also seeks to increase the party's membership, encourage democratic governance, and continue to prevent atrocities.
The resolution was passed unanimously by all the members present at last night's meeting of the National Assembly.
