Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has announced yesterday that they are seeking investors to establish solar energy systems in thirteen islands.
In their announcement, the ministry said that they are seeking investors to set up 15 megawatt solar panels in thirteen islands and provide electricity services through a design, build, finance, own, operate and transfer policy. Applying for bidding is now open for investors interested in taking up this project.
This project is being undertaken under the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energe (ARISE) program.
Under this project, 2 megawatt solar panels will be placed in Laamu atoll Hithadhoo, Laamu atoll Kunahandhoo, Laamu atoll Maibaadhoo, Laamu atoll Maamendhoo, Laamu atoll Maavah, Laamu atoll Dhan'bidhoo.
Additionally, 13 megawatt solar panels will be set up in Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo, Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru, Laamu atoll Isdhoo, Laamu atoll Kalhaidhoo, Laamu atoll Fonadhoo, Laamu atoll Gan, and Gaafu Alif atoll Vilin'gili.
The ministry's announcement said that the bidding process for the project will be held in international competitive procurement standards. The bidding will be in single stage two envelope process under World Bank Procurement Regulation for IPF Borrowers. Bidding will be opened on October 22, they said.
Once implemented, 6 million litres of fuel usage will be saved, and expenditure on fuel from government budget will be decreased by MVR 48 million, the ministry said.
The government aims to increase renewable energy production to 33 percent of total energy produced in the country in the next five years. The government has announced a number of other projects under this policy as well.
