Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed has declared that Business Center Corporation (BCC) has been contracted to conduct salt production work in Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade today, Saeed emphasized that efforts must be exerted towards fully utilizing and benefiting from the wide Maldivian seas.

He stated that BCC has been assigned to commence the local production of salt and revealed that deliberations were also held to seek a research assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to conduct the essential research required to proceed these efforts.

"Good quality salt in large quantities is imported by the tourism industry in Maldives. And the varieties of salt brought to be used by the Maldivians in the country; [we] want to produce all these inside the country," he said.

Saeed highlighted the importance of conducting sufficient studies to begin the work, however, assured that there are no plans to waste years into the effort.

"By God's Will, this will be done within these five years," said Saeed.

Discussions regarding the local production of salt was also carried out during the administration of former President, Abdulla Yameen. However, neither the work nor research on the process were commenced during that time.

Ending the country's economical dependance on a single industry and increasing the country's exports is a pledge of this administration.
