The government has decided to give a special allowance to health workers if they agree not to work elsewhere and serve only at the hospital where they are employed at.
During a press conference held on Sunday evening at the President's Office to discuss the pay revision for health workers, Secretary General of the Pay Commission Dr. Mohamad Faizal announced that the "Exclusive Service Benefit" allowance would be provided to employees serving as specialist medical practitioners from rank 10 to sub-specialist medical practitioners.
He said that the allowance would also be extended to dentists.
"...it is an allowance provided to employees who sign a contract with their employing hospital to exclusively provide their services to the hospital, take on additional responsibilities determined, and not practice elsewhere," Faizal said.
He said the allowance would be paid on a case-by-case basis after hospitals submit their request to the Pay Commission.
However, he did not disclose the exact amount of the allowance.
Senior sub-specialist consultants have received a salary increase from MVR 71,649 to MVR 87,392, while consultant sub-specialists' salaries have risen by 28 percent to MVR 77,577. The salary for senior consultants will also be raised from MVR 55,675 to MVR 66,702. The government has reported that there are presently 14 doctors from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) who hold this position.
Specialist doctors working at the government's main hospital IGMH have faced public criticism and complaints accusing them for overcharging at private clinics and medical centers after completing their duties at the hospital. Moreover, concerns have been raised alleging infrequent attendance to patients at the IGMH.
