Senior Leader of Maldives Democratic party (MDP), President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the party has no choice but to move forward with difference of opinions at the fourth congress of the MDP which began in Male' city last night.

The President made this statement amid major differences of opinion between him and the president of the longest-running party, former President Mohamed Nasheed. Differences of opinion between President Solih and Nasheed have led to the party splitting into two factions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the congress, the President said that while there is unanimous agreement on some issues, there has always been room for different opinions and views within the MDP.

"The only way [for the party] is to move forward with differences of opinion and views. " said President Solih.

While the President noted the differences of opinion, he and Nasheed have submitted a case to the congress regarding system of governance; which has become a source of public controversy.

Nasheed wants to change the Maldives governance to a parliamentary system and has submitted a resolution to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s congress. President Solih has publicly spoken against the parliamentary system of governance.

In his speech, the President spoke about the unjust and oppressive situation of the country when MDP was formed.

He said that one of the purposes of MDP was to ensure a free and fair judiciary where people had the rights to basic necessities of life. President Solih reiterated the amount of collective effort put in to bring about these changes.

The President said that the children born in the year of MDP will vote in next year's presidential election and that the needs and aspirations of the youth of this generation are very different from those 17 years ago.

The President also said that when formulating the policies of MDP, their views should be aligned and that policies should be formulated in such a way that climate change is also included.
