Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu left Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and joined ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in order to work closely with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Dr. Muizzu's decision to join PPM came during the time of President Yameen's concession of the presidential election. Following the concession, the PPM council has sworn to being the active opposition party in the Maldives. Muizzu was one of the leading members of all developmental projects carried out during President Yameen's regime.

PPM will hold a congress in which their future plans and objectives will be revealed. The congress will also include appointment of members to positions of power within the party.

President Yameen's 2013 election win included MDA as part of the succeeding coalition. Dr. Muizzu was appointed as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure through a predetermined MDA slot.

One of the main objectives of the agreement between the PPM-MDA alliance was to work together in order to succeed any upcoming elections. However, their alliance was in peril come time for the 2018 election, making Dr. Muizzu the only member of MDA actively participating in any PPM campaigning.

Dr. Muizzu stood by President Yameen throughout the campaigning and accompanied him to all the islands that PPM extended their canvassing to, regardless of MDA not having an official role.

The groundless 'alliance' between the two parties was further made evident due to the lack of public support given to the ruling party's campaign from MDA leader Ahmed Siyam, who did not make any statements in support of President Yameen.

Furthermore, the party's Vice President Ali Mauroof was put in charge of running MDA with Siyam making no public appearances representing the party.
