Minister Shahid credits Maldives' win to it's faith in international law

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid said on Friday that Maldives that the Maldives was able to successfully delimit its maritime boundary in the south due to its adherence to international laws and principles.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ruled that the Maldives will receive a major share of the disputed area, after differences between the Maldives and Mauritius on the demarcation of the sea area north of Mauritius and south of the Maldives.

ITLOS allocated the disputed overlapping territory of 95,000 square kilometers between Maldives and Mauritius, providing each country with a 200-mile continental shelf. Maldives has been granted 47,232 square kilometers while Mauritius has been given 45,331 square kilometers.

Mauritius received 0.960 square kilometers for every square kilometer received by Maldives.

Shahid highlighted this to be a success for the Maldives as it received more sea area than Mauritius. He also credited the country's faith in the international system for ensuring the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary.

"Today, the Maldives has successfully delimited its maritime boundary in the south. We did so, with full adherence to international law, and international principles," Shahid said via Twitter.

"Our faith in the international system, has resulted in bringing certainty to the outer limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone," shahid added, congratulating the President.

He also noted the efforts of Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, who led the Maldivian legal team that advocated in ITLOS, in securing a large part of the country's territorial waters.
