Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on Tuesday commenced reclamation work for the airport to be developed at Hoarafushi, Haa Alif Atoll.
Official proceedings for the project began in June. During a special ceremony held, MTCC's CEO Ibrahim Ziyath said that the reclamation of 1.2 kilometers needed for the airport and runway is to be completed within 203 days.
The western lagoon near Maafinolhu will be reclaimed to build the runway, and the northern lagoon will be reclaimed for the development of the terminal and other facilities for the airport.
A road will also be reclaimed under this project in order to connect the reclaimed area to Hoarafushi.
This project will be carried out by MTCC's Dreger "Mahaa Jarraafu" according to Ziyath.
Approximately MVR 64 million will be spent on this project to reclaim 16 hectares of land.
