The Maldives government has allocated a number of flats for doctors and nurses under its social housing project, "Hiyaa".

According to the government, 475 out of 7,000 social housing flats are to be given to doctors and nurses. Out of the total, 125 flats are allocated for doctors while 350 flats are for nurses.

Amendments have been brought to the social housing category 12, under which flats are awarded to doctors and nurses. The revised version now enables doctors and nurses working in the private sector to apply for two-room apartments, in addition to those working as civil servants.

The current amendment adds nurses with National Qualification Certificate level 4, 5 and 6 in addition to the previous category, which only allowed Certificate 7, 8, 9 and 10 holders, to apply for the flats.

In addition, amendments were made to the doctors' medical eligibility criteria. Doctors must have clinical specialization and a basic medical degree or bachelor of dental surgery certificate approved by the Maldives Medical Council, an additionally, a postgraduate diploma level of no less than two years.

The application period is open until July 31, and forms must be submitted to special desks placed at the Dharubaaruge convention centre. However, application forms will be issued and accepted from the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure after July 8.

From amongst doctors and nurses, only those who are married and aged between 18 - 40 are eligible to apply for flats.
