North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy submitted a resolution to the Parliament during Monday's sitting, calling on the government to fulfil its pledge to ensure a free and fair election.

Recently, parliamentarians supporting Speaker Mohamed Nasheed within the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been submitting resolutions criticising the government on various issues.

The first reading of the resolution was heard in Parliament today.

The resolution states that free and fair elections are a constitutional right and that it is the duty of the state to facilitate this.

"Resources from ministries and state-owned enterprises are being used for campaign activities on a large scale," Imthiyaz alleged.

MP Imthiyaz's resolution also states that the President conducts campaign activities during official government trips and that this is an improper use of state funds and resources, as well as employees.

It went on to say that the government and state-owned companies are increasing political positions to influence elections, forcing them to campaign for a candidate of the government’s choice and threatening them with unemployment if they do not comply.

The resolution also alleged that SME loans are being threatened with annulment if they do not vote for the pro-government candidate.

The resolution said these practices have undermined the validity of elections and are a hindrance to democracy in the Maldives.

The resolution called on the government to stop influencing and pursue a clear policy in line with its pledge to hold free and fair elections.

Members from the Nasheed faction also filed a resolution on Monday, saying the government has not fulfilled its pledge to provide housing.
