Over fifty expatriates live in the accommodation block in the upper floors of the cafe' that caught fire this afternoon, Mihaaru News has reported.

An MNDF Official at the scene of the fire also stated that fifty expatriates and six Maldivians had been evacuated due to the fire.

The official said that efforts are ongoing to identify these individuals now. Once this is determined, they will be provided with temporary shelter, he said.

The Gaamagu Cafe' building on Sosun Magu is three storeys high, with the upper floors being built on decks with corrugated metal sheets.

It has been reported that the upper two floors were being used as accommodation blocks for expatriate workers. Over fifty individuals live there. The cafe', too, is run for expatriates.

The fire also affected an adjacent residence.

The fire originated in the kitchen of the cafe', and has now been controlled by MNDF Fire and Rescue Services.

Although no persons were injured in the fire, two have been taken to hospital due to being affected by smoke.

The building was damaged beyond use in the fire.
