Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said that a government company will be providing taxi services with the aim of offering ease in taxi services in Male' and Hulhumale'.
Speaking at the Economic Committee in parliament yesterday, Ameen revealed this while addressing the concerns of taxi drivers.
Drivers Association had sent a letter of concern to parliament in July concerning the taxi line which is to be introduced under the government's Male' Fahi initiative. Although he was requested to respond to the letter, the Minister decided instead to attend the Economic Committee meeting and share his response.
At the meeting, the Minister said that a government company has now been tasked with providing taxi services, and preparations to commence the service are currently underway.
He assured that the introduction of this service will not pose any setbacks for current taxi drivers.
According to Ameen, 50 percent of employees of the government taxi line will be permanent staff. The remaining will be those who serve day jobs and wish to take up taxi driving in off hours.
He said that brand new cars will be brought in for the service. Parking areas for these will be designated and handed over to the ministry within the next ten days, he said.
The minister did not reveal which government company would be providing the service.
- Foreigners cannot drive taxis
- 25 percent of vehicles used as taxi will be electric vehicles
- Drivers to wear a uniform
- Hourly fee for drivers to be a minimum of MVR 100
- Government to manage fuel and maintenance of taxis
- Salaries to be paid weekly
- Run the taxi service around the clock
Minister Ameen says that provision of this taxi service will also contribute towards resolving traffic congestion issues in the capital.
