The Maldives Police Service has launched a new operation aimed at stopping and searching people who wear helmets in areas where it is not required by law.
The move comes after concerns that some individuals are using helmets to conceal their identities while committing crimes.
In a statement, the police emphasised that the operation was necessary to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. The operation will monitor road users in areas where helmets are not required, and any suspects will be stopped and searched.
The general road traffic rules state that drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles are required to wear helmets in areas where speeds exceeding 30 km/h are allowed, including the Sinamalé Bridge and highways. Signboards indicating the speed limit are posted in the relevant areas.
The police's decision to launch the operation follows a recent incident where two men wearing helmets caused significant damage to a café in Hulhumalé. On Friday night, a man was seriously injured in an attack by a group of men who were following him; an arrest has been made in connection with the latter incident.
