Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MPs have halted parliamentary proceedings in response to dissatisfaction with Minister of Housing and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar's answers during a parliament sitting today.

Minister Haidar was summoned to address concerns regarding flats and land allocation during the previous administration. MDP members voiced their discontent with his responses, claiming that they did not adequately address delays in the provision of housing for the public.

The minister stated he was unprepared for some questions and would provide answers at a later time.

Several MPs raised points of order, arguing that minister Haidar’s responses were insufficient. When Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla ruled that these were not valid points of order, MDP members continued to protest loudly.

The Speaker ordered Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad to leave the chamber after he refused to comply with the speakers directive. MP Ziyad was joined by other opposition members who protested near the speakers chamber.

MDP parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Nazil, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, and Keyodhoo MP Mohamed Niushad were asked to leave parliament premises.

When these members did not exit the chamber, the Speaker had to adjourn the sitting. The agenda was abandoned as questioning of Minister Haidar could not proceed due to the ongoing protest.
