The Maldives begins its membership at the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023 to 2025 term effective on Sunday, January 1.

The island nation won a seat on the Human Rights Council following the elections held earlier on October 11, 2022, in New York.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the membership will be “guided by the principles of human rights, democracy, good governance and climate action”.

The ministry further confirmed that during its three-year membership, Maldives will put efforts to advance key areas of human rights “in the true spirit of multilateralism”. The country will also contribute towards strengthening national mechanisms and government institutions at all levels to uphold human rights.

The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva Dr. Asim Ahmed will serve as the Vice President of the Human Rights Council for 2023 representing the Asia Pacific Group.
