Gadhdhoo has protested against the removal of the unused generator on their Island. Fenaka had made attempts to transfer the genset to Fuvahmulah City to resolve their electricity shortage, but displeasure amongst Gadhdhoo residents has halted these efforts.
An unused generator in Gaaf Dhaalu Gadhdhoo that Fenaka Corporation Limited began efforts to transfer to Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah due to the electricity issues in the island has prompted protests amongst Gadhdhoo residents who are protesting against taking it away.
Since the beginning of last month, due to the damage of an 800-kilowatt generator in Fuvahmulah, power cuts are scheduled during the intervals when the electricity load is high. Fenaka has been working to resolve this issue by transfering the unused generator set in Gadhdhoo to Fuvahmulah since then.
The residents of Gadhdhoo set out early last night to protest against the efforts being made by Fenaka to remove the generator placed in Gadhdhoo by the company. Fenaka has presently halted this attempt as they do not wish to forcefully remove the generator.
Managing Director of Fenaka Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said that the unused generator in Gadhdhoo was taken to the island for the new power house that is currently being built there.
“The generator can be used after it [power house] has been built. Right now, it is stored on the port.” Muaz said.
He said that the attempts to transfer the generator set to Fuvahmulah was to find a temporary solution to their electricity shortage.
“Fuvahmulah is in need of an 800-kilowatt gen set. Due to the country not having a required generator set in stock, efforts were made to transfer the Gadhdhoo generator as they are the only source within the country currently in possession of an 800-kilowatts gen set.” He said.
He clarified that the transfer of the generator from Gadhdhoo to Fuvahmulah was temporary and it will be taken back once Fuvahmulah acquires an 800-kilowatt generator.
He also said that some people in the island expressed their displeasure once Fenaka had sent a boat to fetch the generator set in Gadhdhoo. He added that the generator was placed in the island by Fenaka and that the company reserves the right to remove it once required.
Muaz said the efforts to transfer the Genset to Fuvahmulah is hindered due to public displeasure within the island and clarified that Fenaka has no intentions to forcefully remove it in opposition to the people's wishes.
