Cases against four men arrested over assassination attempt of Nasheed sent for prosecution

Police has sent the cases of the first four people arrested over the attempted assassination of Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed to the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) today.

On May 6, an IED attached to a motorcycle outside of Speaker Nasheed's residence exploded, injuring Nasheed and several others. The first four people arrested in this case are Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed from Vaavu Thinadhoo, Mujaz Ahmed from Male', in addition to Thahumeen Ahmed from Gaafu Alifu Kondey, and Ahmed Fathih from Laamu Gan.

Prosecutor General (PG) had to decide on prosecution within 15 days according to law.

Currently there are seven people under police custody in relation to the May 6 terror attack. Several of them were arrested during the joint operations conducted by Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) against extremism.

Shameem said their investigations were ongoing as well.

More information regarding the attack and the ongoing investigation will be provided to the media on a press conference scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 24. He will be joining the police on this press conference.

Additionally, police has said Criminal Court has ordered to keep three of the people whose case have been sent for prosecution under police custody until their hearings are over. They are Adham, Mujaz, and Thahumeen. Additionally, the remand for Ali Haisham, who was arrested in connection to the assassination attempt later on, has been extended by an additional 30 days.
