High Court will be announcing its verdict in the appeal case of former President Abdulla Yameen tomorrow, Thursday, April 18.

Yameen had appealed at the High Court the 11 year prison sentence he received from Criminal Court last year for money laundering and bribery convictions in relation to the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah.

Yameen was also fined USD 5 million.

Besides Yameen, former Felidhoo MP Yoosuf Naeem was convicted in the same case for bribery for which he was sentenced to three years in jail.

Appeal hearings for the case were concluded by November last year.

Mihaaru reports that the High Court will be announcing its ruling on the case tomorrow afternoon.

The case is being presided over by Judge Hassan Shafeeu, Judge Huzaifa Mohamed and Judge Mohamed Saleem.

Although sentenced to a prison term, Yameen has been under house arrest since October last year. Both Yameen and members of his legal team have heavily criticized the government over delays in the conclusion of the appeal case.

Earlier in 2019, Yameen received a conviction from the Criminal Court on charges of money laundering regarding the lease of Gaafu Alif atoll Vodamula and was sentenced to five years in jail. However, in 2021, the Supreme Court revoked this verdict and acquitted him.
