An inmate has passed away in state custody on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Maldives Correctional Service.
Mohamed Rasheed, 36, from Laamu atoll, Kunahandhoo, entered state custody last week Sunday. He was first treated at the medical facility in Malé Prison, where he was serving his sentence. However, at around 10:00 p.m. last night, when his condition deteriorated, he was brought to the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
After administering CPR, the hospital pronounced him dead at 10:40 am, according to the statement from the correctional services.
Rasheed was serving a six-month and 14-day sentence for theft. The correctional services said he had no history of health problems, and the medical checks conducted prior to his incarceration did not reveal any signs of illness.
His family was notified of his passing immediately, the prison authority said.
