The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Hulhumale' Cat Shelter has been held on Thursday.
The ceremonial foundation stone was laid by First Lady Sajida Mohamed and Male' Mayor Adam Azim.
The facility is being built in collaboration by the Male' City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
In a press release issued by the Ministry on Thursday, they announced that construction of the facility's boundary wall had commenced on March 19, marking the beginning of work on this project.
The Ministry further said the aim of the facility is to provide safe housing for the stray cat population currently living on the streets of the Greater Male' region, and to protect them from fast spreading veterinary diseases as well as human inflicted or accidental injuries.
As per the ministry, amongst the services provided by the facility will be:
- a quarantine area for cats
- a clinic and laboratory
- a pharmacy
- shelter, as well as appropriate medical services
- a play area for the cats
"This temporary cat shelter will provide a permanent solution to the multiple issues faced due to the increasing number of stray cats in the Male' area," the statement reads.
