Electoral Mayor, Adam Azim has expressed his concerns regarding the Male' City Council's decision to transfer major projects managed by the council to the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
In a post on social media platform, X, he stated that this procedure was passed in violation of Chapter 8 of the Constitution along with the procedures determined in the Decentralization Act while also going against the expectations clearly expressed by the citizens of Male' City for the development of their city.
“We urge the government to stop the attempts by the Ministers to seize projects managed by the City Council," he says.
He implored the State to delay the implementation of the decision passed by the Council today until he assumes control of his elected position as Male City Council Mayor.
The agenda of today's council meeting was to share updates on projects managed by the Council while deliberating on decisions for a few proposals presented. Minister of the state's Corporate Development Ministry, Mohamed Shahid, who had worked on these projects at the time also attended the meeting. During the meeting, he had submitted a proposal to transfer City Council's projects to the Planning Ministry.
The Council proposed that projects exceeding a budget of MVR 100 million must be relinquished to the civic body. They also proposed that such projects be returned to the City Council should the implementation procedures fail to be employed within 6 months.
As the majority of the council consists of ruling congress party, PNC (People's National Congress)/PPM (Progressive Party of Maldives) members, all but 1 member out of 10 who had abstained from voting, endorsed the decision.
The council faced scrutiny as this sudden motion was passed days before the elected Male City Council Mayor, Maldives Progressive Party (MDP)'s Adam Azim, assumes his new role.
