The swearing in ceremony of Male' City's new Mayor is scheduled to be held at Dharubaaruge this coming Monday night.

In addition to the Mayor, the three newly elected members of the council will also be taking their oath of office.

Adam Azim is the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate for the mayoral election held earlier this month. He won the election by a large margin, with his closest contender being ruling People's National Congress Candidate Azima Shakoor.

During a press conference held today at the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Minister Adam Shareef stated that under the local government system, Mayors of cities are very key positions.

“We are aiming to carry on this ceremony as a very big and special event. The president will also attend this ceremony,” the Minister said.

Adam shareef also expressed the state’s hopes that the new Mayor Adam Azim, working collaboratively with the government, will improve Male City as needed.

The minister said that in addition to fulfilling the needs of Male' City citizens, the state will be working to realize the promises made by President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, to the country as well.

The mayoral position of Male' City was made vacant due to the previous Mayor winning the Presidential elections. The positions at Maafannu South Constituency, Henveiru South Constituency and Henveiru Central Constituency became vacant as a result of the former members leaving to take up government positions.

Last Saturday’s elections appointed Hassan Nizam of PNC as member for Maafannu South Constitution. Henveyru South Constituency was won by PNC’s Aminath Rishfa Ahmed. Henveyru Central Constituency’s position was taken by opposition MDP’s candidate Ahmed Rishwan Rasheed.

In accordance with the provisional results reported by EC (Election Commission of Maldives), the elected Mayoral Candidate Adam Azim garnered 7,621 votes. Second most voted candidate was Aishath Azima Shakoor contending on PNC’s ticket. She had gathered 5,031 votes.
