The project to develop food courts in capital Male’s southwest harbour was awarded to local firm MS Carpentry & Construction last week, announced State Trading Organisation (STO).

An official of STO said Thursday that MS Carpentry commenced the foundation work of the food courts this week. However, STO is yet to reveal the amount for which the project was awarded to MS Carpentry, which has been granted a period of seven months and fifteen days to complete development.

The housing ministry had signed the agreement with STO last January to revamp the old cafes in the harbour. The project was then delegated to be completed within six months.

“The work was delayed due to some changes we had to bring to its design and some other aspects. It also took time to seek a suitable contractor for the project,” explained the STO official.

According to the official, the new food courts will be completed by the end of March next year.

The housing ministry had earlier said that the revamped food court area will have two entrances and two rotary parking systems for motorcycles and cars.

The region measuring approximately 30,000 square feet used to house 40 small cafes. The newly opened area will instead feature 26 food courts.
