A long-standing signage bearing the insignia of Aminiya School is to be moved inside its grounds and placed as a historical monument.

The sign, having stood at the school's main gate on Chandhanee Magu for many years, was removed on Saturday following the demolishment of the old building area.

A recreation of the star emblem embroidered on the badge of the school uniform and a banner bearing the school name, the sign has now been placed withiin the school grounds.

Following a now-viral picture of the emblem being lifted off the building, former students took to social media voicing their concerns regarding apparent damage, speaking of the nostalgia associated with the sign and expressing hopes that it be preserved.

In a statement given to Mihaaru News by the State Minister for the Ministry of Education Ahmed Shafeeu, he spoke of the historic importance of the the beloved signage, affirming that sign would not be destroyed.

“Our drawings include placing the monument near the gate entrance, surrounded by a small garden, ” said Shafeeu.

The ministry was however, unable to provide an age for the sign itself.

Since the beginning of this year, more than 2000 students have been studying at classes within the school’s newly constructed eight-storey building - one of the largest such educational premises in Maldives.

Aminiya School, renamed from its original moniker ‘Madhrasathul Saniyya’ during the time of President Ameen, has been educating students for over 74 years.

As the first girls' secondary school established in Maldives, Aminiya remained an all girls-school until 14 June 2011 and calls among its alumni some of the most illustrious female personalities in the country.
