Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Shahid Ali, on Saturday announced that top level discussions have commenced regarding the transfer of the Commercial Harbour from capital Male' to the landfill island of Thilafushi.

According to Shahid, details on shifting MPL's port will be finalised during the discussions with government officials.

Previous governments had also aimed to transfer the commercial harbour to Thilafushi due to shortage of space, although none had brought the plan to fruition.

Furthermore, Shahid assured that MPL is also looking for short-term solutions to tackle the problem of space in the existing harbour in Male’.

“We're repairing broken equipment to help temporarily solve the problem of space", said Shahid Ali. “In addition, the harbour is being rearranged in order to make full use of maximum space”.

As reported by Shahid, another yard is being established in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale’ to expand storage space for containers.

However, MPL stated that it could not specify when construction of the harbour in Thilafushi would commence.

There have been several complaints from businessmen regarding the delay in unloading and clearing of cargo at the Commercial Harbour.
