MPL’s container clearance sees 14 percent decline in June

The average number of containers cleared by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in June 2023 declined by 14 percent in June compared to May 2023.

According to MPL, a total of 4,400 containers were cleared from its commercial harbors in June, which is equivalent to 6,180 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Out of these containers, 2,620 were 20-footers and 1,780 were 40-footers.

While the total number of containers cleared in June saw a monthly decline compared to the preceding month, all major perishable groups imported via the commercial harbors also experienced a subsequent decline.

Watermelon imports in June recorded a 16 percent drop, with 20,554 units imported compared to 24,605 units in May. Similarly, bananas witnessed an 18 percent decline, with 8,938 units imported in June compared to 10,908 units in the previous month.

The import of tomatoes experienced the most significant decline, dropping by 28 percent to 12,457 units in June compared to 13,500 units in May. Other major perishables, including eggs, cabbage, onion, potato, pumpkin, and pineapple, also witnessed a decline in June.

MPL reported 15 conventional vessel arrivals and 16 container vessel arrivals at the Malé Commercial Harbor last month.
