Male’ City Council has begun demolishing the upper section of the boundary walls at Aa Sahara Cemetery due to structural wear.
The council said that parts of the wall, which were near collapse, are being taken down to lower the height.
"The collapsing wall of Aa Sahara Cemetery is being removed to create a more open, comfortable, and clean environment," the council said in a post on social media platform on X.
Mayor Adam Azim visited the site to inspect the ongoing work.

To address space limitations, the council constructed a two-storey building at the cemetery, which began in May last year and officially reopened on October 4.
The new facility includes an expanded cemetery mosque, a larger cemetery area, a waiting area for funeral attendees, a public toilet, and a restroom accessible to people with special needs.
Until its closure last May, Aa Sahara Cemetery was Male’s primary burial ground, after which burials were moved to Hulhumale’ Cemetery.
