Aasandha Company Limited, the national health insurance service of Maldives, has signed with three hospitals in Dubai and Bangkok, and plans to commence coverage starting next month.

The agreement was signed with one Dubai hospital and two Bangkok hospitals by Aasandha's Managing Director Aminath Zeeniya, while the hospitals were represented by their respective management.

These hospitals are Burjeel Medical City (BMC) of Dubai and World Medical Hospital as well as Bangkok Hospital of Thailand.

Following his first visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping last January, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the government was working to arrange medical coverage for Maldivians under the Aasandha scheme from Thailand and Dubai.

With the agreements signed, patients will be sent to the hospitals starting 15th January, it has been revealed.

"When going to these places, we will expand Aasandha to cover the accommodation expenses there. That way, our Maldivians will go to places like Dubai and Bangkok with coverage and accommodation expenses [covered], which are far better than the places they go to now, until this country's medical facilities are developed, the President said at the time.

Currently there are 57 foreign hospitals on the Aasandha coverage panel. Out of this, patients were being sent to India and Sri Lanka until now. These include eight Sri Lankan and 49 Indian hospitals.
