An individual who dumped garbage on the streets of Male’ City was caught via CCTV footage and fined for littering.

Male’ City Council said that the person was identified in collaboration with Maafannu VilliPolice and the Council Community Engagement Unit.

Dumping garbage on roads, parks, public places, ports and commercial areas in Male’ and Villimale’ is prohibited. If littering persists, Male’ City Council lodges a complaint with the Maldives Police Service and the individuals responsible for littering will be fined MVR 500 each.

According to Male’ City Council, 42 tonnes of garbage was collected from the streets of Male’ City yesterday alone. More than 200 tonnes of garbage were collected from the streets of the city in the past 16 days.

Last Tuesday, Male’ City Council further stated that so far, a hundred individuals have been fined for littering on the streets.

Despite a large number of individuals being fined, the issue remains unresolved even during Ramadan. People cleaned their houses for Ramadan and took out furniture and other household appliances to the streets. In an effort to tackle this, Male’ City Council and Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) started a special operation to clean the streets.

WAMCO’s three-day free waste collection initiative did not present a solution to the issue as people continued to dump waste on the streets.
