Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has published the voters list for its internal election, showing 94,214 members can vote for the Chairperson position.

The right to vote for the highest administrative position in the party is given to members that had registered with the party by the time the deadline for the candidates to submit applications were up. The party had nearly 93,000 members by the time this election rolled around. This is including the significant amount of people that signed with the party in time for another internal MDP election.

Even though MDP’s internal records show they have more than 94,000 members, only 54,782 members have been registered with the party according to Election Commission’s registry.

The competitive election to elect the Chairperson of MDP has now been postponed to May 14. Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and parliament member for Maafannu Uthuru constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) are running in the election.

The candidates have been aiming verbal attacks towards each other in the promotional campaign activities that are being held in the administrative local islands these days.

According to MDP's constitution, the chairperson is the head of the party responsible for organizing and managing the party's internal affairs. The chairperson will be heading the most vital organs of the party, such as the MDP Congress, and its National Assembly as well.

The post had been filled by parliament member for Henveiru Hulhangu constituency Hassan Latheef.
