COVID-19: Further 36 cases confirmed in Male'

The Health Protection Agency (HPA), in the early hours of Sunday, confirmed that 36 more individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the capital city of Male'.

According to the agency, cases MAV0142 through to MAV0177 consist of 29 Bangladeshis, 6 Maldivians and 1 Indian; divided 31 males and 5 females.

From the above, individual MAV0177 was traced back to case MAV0082, which involves an infant.

Of those newly diagnosed, 30 hailed from three houses previously identified as being vulnerable. Details concerning the remaining six are unknown.

HPA stated that the persons found positive for the virus would be moved to an isolation facility.

This brings the total number of cases in Male', one of the most densely populated areas in the world, to a grim 158.

With comOn Saturday, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) announced a decision to start conducting random COVID-19 tests as part of a community surveillance policy within the capital city of Male.

Maldives' first confirmed case of COVID-19 within the capital city of Male', was recorded on April 15, involving a local woman that sought assistance from a flu clinic in Malé after developing symptoms.

With this development, Maldives now records 177 positive cases, two probable and 161 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 2.9 million people and claimed over 202,670 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 832,500 people have recovered.
