A Maldivian residing in the United Kingdom (UK) has tested positive for COVID-19.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, a source confirmed that the individual received their test results on Wednesday.

Thus far, all four confirmed cases of coronavirus involving Maldivians were of locals that travelled home from the UK. According to UK's The Independent COVID-19 is spreading rapidly throughout the UK.

As of April 8, the country reported a total of 55,242 infections and 6,159 deaths.

On March 19, the government imposed travel restrictions on the UK, allowing only Maldivian citizens to travel home. All those returning will be placed under quarantine for a 14-day period.

Maldives presently records a total of 19 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 13 recoveries. While there are four confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1,518,000 people and claimed over 88,400 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 330,700 people have recovered.
