Ministry of Health is looking into a case of a 8 month old infant's health deteriorating due to negligence on the part of Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuhfushi Regional Hospital.

Images showing the child's arm heavily bruised after having IV cannulas inserted circulated on social media yesterday. Mihaaru contacted the Health Ministry regarding the matter, who said the case is under investigation.

Finance Executive of Kulhudhuhfushi Regional Hospital Mohamed Moosa also confirmed that the hospital, in collaboration with the Health Ministry, is looking into the matter.

"We are carrying out an internal review regarding the case. We are doing it in collaboration with the Ministry as well. We will take action if there is negligence on the part of the doctors or nurses related," he said.

"We are also carrying out a quality internal review of the entire Kulhudhuhfushi Hospital through requesting the Ministry of Health's Quality Department."

A post on social media by the family said the infant had been taken to hospital due to suffering from fever from May 12.

They said five separate consultations had been made with the doctor, but the infant had been sent home each time after being told it was no more than a normal fever.

"Finally, after much pleading, they did the tests and they came back positive for dengue. Due to the fever and infection, and subsequent dehydration and other issues, [the baby's] condition had become serious," the post reads.

The infant has since been transferred to capital Male' city, receiving treatment in the ICU in IGMH.

The family alleges it was the negligence of the Kulhudhuhfushi Regional Hospital that led to the current situation, and calls for action to be taken against those found responsible.
