Police began issuing summons to individuals who made death threats against Maldivian Democratic Network (MDN) founder Shahindha Ismail during a protest in Angolhitheemu, Raa Atoll.

A police media official confirmed that the case concerning the demonstration held on October 18 was under investigation. However, he did not confirm the number of individuals being summoned for questioning or their identities.

MDN is currently under suspension regarding a report released in 2015 which criticized the Maldivian education system, claiming that the Islamic textbooks used by school children encouraged extremism.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police are working to compile an educational research report. The police assured that it would inform relevant institutions to take appropriate administrative measures against MDN after their report is completed.

Meanwhile. Police also stated issuing summons for leading members of MDN.

Public criticism of the NGO is widespread with several demanding an outright ban of MDN, claiming that a suspension was an insufficient measure.
