Chief of Defense Force Lieutenant General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef has retired from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) after 39 years of distinguished service.
MNDF made the announcement on Thursday, revealing that Abdul Raheem had been retired with honors as he is now 60 years of age.
According to the Armed Forces Act, the maximum age limit for holding the position he served in is 60.
Lt. General Rtd. Abdul Raheem served as the Vice Chief of Defense Force under the government of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He was promoted as the Chief of Defense Force with the swearing in of the incumbent President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on November 17, 2023.
It is understood that Lt. General Rtd. Abdul Raheem had made the decision earlier to retire with the new government after having served 37 long years in the military. However, he remained in office as the regime change occurred just a short while before his 60th birthday.
