People's National Congress (PNC), the main party within the ruling coalition, strongly condemned the remarks made by FENAKA Assistant Manager Abdulla Rasheed following public outcry regarding the suggestion that electricity should only be provided to the households that support the government and ruling parties ahead of the contentious People's Majlis Elections scheduled for next week.

"What he [Abdulla Rasheed] said is not the policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, nor is it the policy of this party," PNC clarified in a press statement published on "X".

The post assured that it was President Dr Muizzu's policy to have services provided to the people of Maldives regardless of their political ideology. The press statement was reposted by the President's official X handle on Monday.

Speaking at the campaign rally held in Dhihdhoo on Sunday night for PNC Majlis candidate Abdul Latheef Mohamed, FENAKA Assistant Manager Abdulla Rasheed stood at the podium and said that people were lucky that electricity was being provided to them all in the first place, and that electricity should be limited to certain households.

He added that electricity should only be provided to households that support PNC members until the end of the parliamentary elections.

Spokesperson Heena Waleed responded to questions by journalists in the PPM/PNC media WhatsApp group regarding the incident stating that necessary steps would be taken to investigate the case.

Abdulla Rasheed was appointed as an Assistant Manager at FENAKA Corporation Limited in February last year. Despite the nature of comments he made on a PPM/PNC coalition campaign platform, President Dr Muizzu and his party have maintained that they would not be discriminating among citizens based on their political ideologies and beliefs.
