The state government of Gujarat has disclosed that seaplane operations, initiated with assistance from the Maldives, have been discontinued due to high costs.

According to Indian newspapers, in response to queries from a member of the Ahmedabad State Legislative Assembly, the state government said that the seaplane service was discontinued in 2021 due to excessively high operational expenses. The regional government disclosed an expenditure of USD 1.6 million (MVR 25 million) on the seaplane service.

The trip between Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity in Kevadia commenced in 2020, initially with eight trips a day.

Being the first seaplane operation of its kind in India, it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The flights utilized pilots and crew from the national carrier Maldivian and were conducted in collaboration with SpiceJet, employing a 19-seater seaplane.

Despite the suspension of services, the Gujarat government has expressed its intention to resume operations.
