The government has decided on acquiring multiple wide-body aircraft to launch international flight operations of Maldivian; the national airline.

After the recent cabinet meeting, President's Office Spokesperson Mohamed Shaheeb, during the follow-up press conference, mentioned the national airline's intention to launch direct flight services to prominent tourist market destinations.

Shabeeb announced the government's plan of acquiring two new wide-bodies for the Maldivian Airline's fleet in the upcoming days.

"The government has decided to arrange the funding for Island Aviation through the applicable financing facility under the Ministry of Finance to purchase the wide-body aircraft for the operations," Shaheeb said.

He further informed about the cabinet's decision to facilitate international aviation operations through the initiation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Shabeeb further added that the top priority for Maldivian's international aviation operations is currently China, owing to its significant traveler market that attracts tourism to the Maldives.

For sustainability, the government would also facilitate expenses for handling, navigation, and parking of aircraft, thereby increasing Maldivian Airports Company Limited (MACL)'s financial strength.

"The government would take measures to expedite the efforts to complete the necessary tasks according to the timeline, which would be supervised through the economic council," Shaheeb said.
