Maldivian Airlines is in the process of acquiring a new aircraft to start flights to China.

The Deputy Managing Director of Maldivian Airlines Aishath Jennifer stated that the most difficult obstacle to resuming flights to China was the fact that they only had one Airbus plane at the time. As a result, they have begun the process of purchasing an A330 Airbus as soon as possible.

"We are looking at starting operations in the second quarter of this year," she said.

Island Aviation has already announced interest in the long-term lease of such vessels.

The airline has decided to send one of the two planes currently used for longer journeys without extending its lease, which will end in May of this year. Island Aviation, which runs the airline, had said earlier that the decision to send the plane was taken due to high maintenance costs.

Since China opened its borders in January this year, it has been operating flights to and from the Maldives. Before Covid-19, the flights to China were the highest-earning routes for Maldivian Airline. At that time, Maldivian Airlines flew to six destinations in China.
