Tourism up by 8.3 percent by September end

The number of tourist arrivals in Maldives by the end of September this year increased by 8.3 percent compared to the same period in 2017, statistics show.

According to the statistics publicised by the Ministry of Tourism, the number of tourist arrivals this year by September end was 1,080,459, compared to the 998,009 arrivals recorded in 2017.

The number of visitors for the month of September alone number at 107,620, while arrivals in the same period last year were at 105,984.

The highest number of tourists by the end of September 2018 hailed from Europe with 516,487 visitors (47.8 percent). This is a 14.8 percent spike from the record of 449,833 European visitors last year.

The market in Europe was followed by Asia and America respectively, with tourist arrivals from both regions showing annual increases.

As before, the country with the largest tourism market for Maldives is China, accounting for 20.6 percent of visitors by the end of September this year. China was followed by the United Kingdom at 7.7 percent, and Germany at 7.4 percent.

The tourism ministry is shared that the total number of days spent by visitors had increased by 1.6 percent from last year, with tourists spending an average of 6.4 days in Maldives.
