COVID-19: only 35 positive cases in Male' area

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Monday that there had been only 35 positive cases in the Greater Male' Area within a 24 hour period.

HPA discloses the number of COVID samples they test within a 24 hour period every evening. On Monday, the agency said out of the total 253 samples that have been confirmed to have COVID, only 35 were from Male'.

This is the lowest recorded amount of confirmed positive cases from the Greater Male' Area since late April. COVID-19 cases in Maldives increased in April, following the Local Council Election held on April 10. The most recent wave lead to unprecedented amounts of positive cases within a 24 hour periods in May, with over 1,500 cases on some days in the Greater Male' Area alone. To control the rapid spread, Male' Area was put in a lockdown on May 26, and later extended for an additional two weeks on June 15.

Most of the cases from the past 24 hours were from inhabited islands, with 164 positives being recorded. Three cases were from operational resorts while 43 cases were from islands under development and eight cases from industrial islands.

It should be noted that the number of samples being tested have not decreased. Over 5,200 cases were tested on Monday while 5,613 cases were tested on Sunday.

The number of active cases has decreased as well. Currently there are 4,784 active cases.

So far there has been 207 COVID-19 related fatalities in Maldives.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Maldives is 72,149.
