In order to contain the spread, in the first week of May, Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced travel restrictions for the entire country and later curfews for the Greater Male' Area and for certain other areas as wel.

Speaking at the media briefing held by HEOC, Spokesperson to the President, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said that they have been discussing to seek international aid.

"We want international aid. We are working in all ways to make sure we receive it. We are in discussion with countries that are willing to provide us with aid and we are trying to figure out ways that can be made possible," Mabrook said.

He noted that international aid Maldives received previously was still in use.

The recent spike in COVID-19 cases have seen over 1,000 people getting tested positive almost daily for several weeks now. This month alone, 39 people have died due to COVID, and the healthcare facility of Maldives has been overwhelmed.
