Starting Tuesday, with the exception of Greater Male' Area, travel between the islands will be restricted.

This was a step taken by Health Protection Agency (HPA) to control the spread of COVID-19 within the islands. Maldives is currently seeing an unprecedented amount of active cases.

However, unlike before, most positive cases were seen in the islands instead of the Greater Male' Area.

With the power granted to the Director General of Public Health by the Health Emergency, they announced that travel within the islands will be restricted for one week.

The only exemption was for essential needs such as carrying food and other resources from one island to the other. For this also, a special permission from island councils will be required.

The announcement further stated that the island councils have to work to make ensure the people are provided the services they require.

Since the restrictive measures were eased on the first of April, COVID cases have been increasing. The daily positive rate is around 300-400 these days.

During the most recent media briefing by HEOC, it was stated that going into lock down was not the only method to tackle the spiking number of cases. However, if necessary they will take the required restrictive measures.
